Balwinder Singh

Remembering the violence against Muslims in 2002, against Christians in 2008-09, Balwinder Singh states: “The reason we raise our voice about this still is because minorities are still not safe in India.”

Singh was 17 years old in 1984. As news spread about the loss of innocent lives – children, mothers and senior citizens – due to their religious identity, there was a gradual uprising among the younger community. They wanted to speak out about this injustice, and create a stronger community. In 1987, he was arrested, tortured and jailed for this activism, before being acquitted by the court a month and a half later.
