Bhagwant Kaur and Niranjan Singh

They remember how in Jaipur, people said “Nirinjan Singh bach ke aagia, Nirinjan Singh bach ke aagia”.

In this powerful and emotional interview, Bhagwant Kaur remembers how she hid her husband underneath the train seats. They were traveling from Hazoor Sahib back home to Jaipur when the train halted at a railway station near Agra. She and her three young daughters guarded Nirinjan Singh, facing a mob that had just burned alive the only two other sardars in their train compartment.

When she clasped her hands and remembered Guru Gobind Singh, the mob leader inexplicably told his gang to leave the family. From Agra, traveling in the margins between massacres, Bhagwant Kaur led her family to safety in Jaipur.

Bhagwant Kaur speaks in solidarity with the victims, the widows who have never received justice.
