Who?

  • You! No previous video-making skills necessary
  • Any sort of video camera will do
  • Follow the Easy Steps below

Record History. Make History.

 Why?

  • Make sure the living, breathing history around you is captured forever
  • Join Sikhs across the world in this 30th year solidarity effort
  • Help reach goal of 1,000 vids in 2014.

Together, We are Stronger.

 What?

  • A 12-15 minute with anyone alive in 1984, who remembers how they heard about the violence
  • Each video follows a standard format, with the same general set of questions.
  • Your interviewee May or May not be a direct victim or witness.
  •  All those who saw and survived 1984, are survivors, and we want to preserve their stories.

Pretty much any Sikh alive in 84 has something to share!

 How? 1-2-3 STEPS

STEP 1 Before Interview

STEP 2 During Interview

  • Tell them about the 1984 Living History Project and, if possible, show them the website.
  • Have an in-depth conversation before your turn the camera on–to help refresh their recollections, to learn from them.
  • Listen carefully and respectfully. For many people, telling you their memories and stories might be difficult. Be respectful and if need be, postpone the conversation and video. The individual is always much more important than the Project.

Now, explain the Consent Form (mandatory).

  • IF they are not comfortable showing their face…
  • IF they do not or cannot read/write…
  • Have them sign 2 copies of the Consent Form. Keep one, and send it to us when you submit your video. Return the other one to them for their records.
  • Discuss and decide on the few questions you will record on the 12-15 min video.
  • Make sure there are no distractions in the background: people walking across; odd object; flickering light, etc.
  • Remove any background noise, as much as possible. Let them know to Speak Up as much as possible!
  • Language:  encourage them to speak whatever language comes naturally.
  • Do one “test” video with the first question, to make sure you are set.
  • After a successful “test,” begin recording your video!
    • Explain you can record their story, with their voice, and the camera focused on their hands, or on some object that means something to them (photograph; a piece of art; a karaa, etc.)
    • Have them state their consent on the video itself. Ask them, on the camera, “Do we have your permission to upload this video on the net where everyone can find it?” Record their answer. If they say No, stop recording.
